The idea
Small towns used to have a phone book, a weekly paper, and a bulletin board at the hardware store. Most of that is gone or scattered across a dozen websites and Facebook groups. Our Town Almanac puts it back in one plain place for each town, the way an almanac once did: a complete local directory, the town calendar, a page of town history, conversations with local people, links to the community pages people actually use, and a short monthly newsletter.
One almanac per town
Each town gets its own almanac under its own name, like The Fayetteville Almanac, The Pulaski Almanac, The Lynchburg Almanac, and every one is part of Our Town Almanac.
Who it’s for
- Newcomers who need to find the utility office, a doctor, a school, a church and a good mechanic in their first week.
- Locals who want a number, an address, or the date of the fall festival without scrolling through ads.
- Local businesses, who get a free basic listing and can keep it correct themselves.
How listings are compiled
Each town’s directory is compiled from public sources only, and every listing names its source. For Fayetteville, TN, Pulaski, TN, Lynchburg, TN, the sources are:
- Chamber: local chamber of commerce member pages (usually the most current).
- City / County / Metro Govt.: the town’s or county’s own website.
- Google Maps: public business listings on Google Maps, kept only when they show recent activity.
- Facebook: a business’s own public Facebook page.
- BBB: Better Business Bureau profiles (BBB keeps older profiles, so confirm the business is still open).
- OSM: OpenStreetMap.
- NCES: the U.S. Department of Education school locator.
- iBegin: an older directory aggregator, used sparingly.
Blank fields mean no public source listed that item. Listings with an address outside the town are kept and marked with the town they’re in. Listings compiled from public sources; some info may be out of date.
Kept up to date every month
Each directory is refreshed monthly. Business owners can claim or correct a listing or add a business, and changes go into the next update.
Independent
Our Town Almanac is an independent project. It isn’t affiliated with any city or county government or any chamber of commerce. Being listed is free, and basic listings will stay free.
