Howdy, neighbor
Whether you’ve just unpacked the moving truck or you’ve lived here all your life, The Shelbyville Almanac is a plain, old-fashioned almanac of the town: a directory to help you find your way around Shelbyville and Bedford County, the town calendar, local history, and its people. Listings are free, and every one names the public source it came from.
Shelbyville is the county seat of Bedford County, laid out in 1810 around a courthouse square on the Duck River and incorporated in 1819. It is known as the "Walking Horse Capital of the World," home of the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration each late summer, and as "The Pencil City." The county's other towns are Bell Buckle, Normandy and Wartrace, plus the unincorporated community of Unionville.
Around town: The courthouse square (the Shelbyville Courthouse Square Historic District, on the National Register) and its markers and veterans memorials; the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration Grounds; the Duck River, which runs through town; and the railroad towns of Bell Buckle, Wartrace and Normandy nearby. The Chamber's tourism page points visitors to WalkingHorseCountry.com.
